MESSAGE: My name is Almaz I live in the United State. I am looking for my Father Siyaad Makonnen. My father is from a small village in Ethiopia in the provinces of Wollo called Mersa but his work with “ESBU” Elementary School Building Unit was a Swedish run Program in the 1970s (if you would like to know more about his place of work ESBU program here is a very good website http://www.sida.se/Publications/Import/pdf/sv/Ethiopia---Sweden_430.pdf took him many cities and villages both in Ethiopia and Eritrea his last place of work in Eritrea was a Village called Adebeza in the provinces of Seraye and in Ethiopia a city called Gondar. The first and last time I have seen my Father was in 1983 in Asmara Eritrea. My father has a picture of me and I have the same picture and he knows well of me. I am told my father made many efforts to know and connect with me when I was younger. In 1983 my father and his Wife had traveled from Ethiopia to Eritrea for his sister-in-law funeral and that was first and last I seen him. After that my father made many effort to connect with me through my mother but I had already left the country went to Sudan and eventually made to the United State in 1989. My mother name is Lucia Woldegebrial she is from Eritrean a small Village called “Adebeza in provinces of Seraye Eritrea”. The story goes my father came to my mother’s Villager around 1970’s with the Swedish program called "ESBU" which stands for Elementary School Building Unit. The program “ESBU” was run by Swedish volunteers and support bullied schools in the Villages. Elementary School Building Unit “ESBU” to eliminate illiteracies in the remote Villages in both Eritrean and Ethiopian. There in Eritrea in Village called Adebeza my mother and Father meet and they had me while my father worked with the program ESBU he came to my mother’s village through the program ESBU which was again a Swedish run program.
After I was born my Grandmother Kudesan Zerea made the long journey from Eritrea to Ethiopia and informed my Father of my birth and my Father gave her a hand written piece of paper with his name his birth of place which is “Mersa Wollo” and his phone and address at the time. This piece of paper was the only treasure I had of my father when I lost that paper I was heartbroken and for many reason I don’t know where to search for him. I was born in Asmara Eritrea around 1974 but not long after that I have moved to the village Adebeza to live with my Grandmother Kudesan Zerea. I was raised by my Grandmother she have always told me how kind and wonderful of a person my father was and how hard he try to connect and create relationship with me but my mother’s family would not allow that out of fear of losing me. My grandmother said she retargeted that now, but at the time she was afraid he would take me away from her. If you have any information about my father Siyaad Makonnen please contact me at yadu36@yahoo.com I thank you in Advance for all your help. Almaz
